Students will choose from two emphases/tracks:
Black Americana Studies Option
36 hours
1. Core Requirements (16-19 hrs):

AFS 4650 Internship in Africana Studies 3-6
2. Foreign language/foreign study requirement (3-8 hrs):
This requirement can be met by:

earning foreign language credit through foreign study (INTL 3300-3310) OR
-
taking at least one course beyond the 101-level in any foreign language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese recommended).
3. Electives (sufficient to bring major total to 36 hours)
Other elective courses that focus on the African American experience must be approved by the Africana Studies advisor.
African Studies Option

Other elective courses that focus on the African experience must be approved by the Africana Studies advisor from among courses offered at WMU. At least one of these courses must be at the 3000-level or higher.
Students in the African Studies track are strongly encouraged to look into the study abroad opportunities available through the Haenicke Institute for International and Area Studies.
